A Printmaking Summer Retreat based on Collagraphs
‘Inspirational Northumbria’ is a creative summer retreat exploring collagraph printmaking. It’s an opportunity to delve into your creativity, drawing on the North Pennines landscape, the architectural details of The Lord Crewe Arms Hotel, Blanchland Abbey, and the moors and woodlands around the monastic village of Blanchland. An area of outstanding natural beauty, it provides a stunning backdrop from which to gather your source material.
The course is suitable for complete beginners looking to try something new, right through to experienced printmakers looking for new skills and a new perspective on their own work. Enjoy three days of creative play in magnificent inspirational surroundings, returning at the end of each day to the comfort, warm welcome and great food of The Lord Crewe Arms.
By the end of the course expect to take home with you new or refined skills and collagraph printmaking techniques, a small portfolio of your own prints and the plates you have made.
Monday is meet and greet and get to know you over afternoon tea, weather permitting, in the glorious abbey garden. When we are all feeling ‘well at home’ I’ll provide a short overview of the week ahead with the use of plates and printed examples. Artistic appetites wetted, we’ll take a short tour of the hotel, abbey church, grounds and village seeking vantage points, corners of the village or architectural details that catch your fancy and from which you can draw your inspiration. As will be the case over the entire retreat, I will be on hand to advise or suggest. Over dinner, I’ll be mapping out the plan for the coming days.
Tuesday August 8th
After breakfast – you can return to some of the best spots found the previous evening to gather reference material (sketches and/or using your smart phone to take photographs).
Late mid morning – we’ll pick up the taxi to the studio. The day in the studio will begin with a demonstration or two – and lots of chance to question and comment! In no time at all, you will be getting your hands inky making and testing out or ‘proofing’ your own printmaking plates, first ‘blind’ (with no ink),then in one colour and so on. Easy steps for newbies, experienced hands moving along at their preferred pace!
Your chariot will return to collect you late afternoon to take you back to the hotel. You will have a chance to freshen up and shower, relax in the medieval crypt bar, or explore further before dinner with your fellow travellers in printmaking.
Wednesday August 9th
Day two is all about me, as an experienced collagraph printmaker, sharing with you my many years of experience. The day will include short, informal demonstrations focused on specific techniques including multi-colour printing and two plate printing – always followed rapidly by a chance to try for yourself! There will also be ample opportunity (and encouragement!) to explore personal avenues of collagraph interest. Some structure – but lots of freedom to roam!
Thursday August 10th
The final day – you’ll spend it refining the techniques I’ve shown you, mixing and matching with additional advice, hints and tips added in, as appropriate to your individual plates. As on the previous days, I will be checking with you that you are getting from the retreat what you came looking for. By now, I guarantee, you will be learning from each other as well as from me! In fact, I would be surprised if I am not learning just a wee bit from some of you! We’ll aim to clear up and review the week and our work by 4pm, before you leave.
Should the finish time make it difficult for you to make your return travel that day, there is the option to book an additional night’s accommodation. Or you may simply be unable to pull yourself away from the idyll that is the Lord Crewe! Just mention this when booking.
Rather than my waxing lyrical about the accommodation at The Lord Crewe I thought I would just link you to their Rooms page on their website. They have set aside some of their ‘Cosies’ for the Retreat.
Let me just say that my other half treated ourselves to a couple of nights at the Lord Crewe, and we weren’t disappointed! Don’t take my word for it. Here are Trip Advisor’s reviews.
Located on the B6306 on the road between Edmundbyers and Hexham, The Lord Crewe Arms is easily accessed from both North and South. If you are travelling up then it’s a left at Junction 58 off the A1(M) onto the A68 and through the hills. If you’re heading down across the border, jump on the A68 all the way to the lovely Roman town of Corbridge and then head up. Our Sat Nav post code is DH8 9SP.
And just incase alternative modes of transport are more your thing, we are just under an hour away from Newcastle train station and airport and both provide regular links to London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Southampton and more.
Catch the train to Newcastle upon Tyne or to Carlisle from where you can catch a connecting train to Hexham. You can pick up a taxi outside the station to Blanchland. If possible we will try to coordinate a taxi pick up if there is more than one party arriving at the same time. This can be arranged closer to the time.
Newcastle has an international airport. It is 35 – 40 minutes car or taxi drive from Blanchland.
Whether you are arriving by air or by train, The Lord Crewe Arms can advise you on a taxi pick up should you require one.
