Nesting Colony II
Nesting Colony II
INSPIRATION
"Nesting Colony II," a captivating semi-abstract monotype print by Carol Nunan, an Irish artist living in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. This seascape print showcases a unique technique known as a ghost print, utilising the residual ink to create a softer and more subdued colour palette from the first print. Inspired by the breathtaking nesting colonies of gannets on the cliffs of St. Kilda in the Outer Hebrides, Carol's artwork reflects the awe-inspiring beauty of those surroundings. Interestingly, The 5th Marquess of Bute acquired St. Kilda in the 1930s, later transforming it into a seabird nature reserve under the stewardship of the National Trust of Scotland.
Carol is particularly captivated by the gannets, which she can see diving offshore from where she lives in Rothesay. Their incredible diving skills leaving her in awe. Fearlessly, these birds plunge into the depths of the water, engaging in a display reminiscent of dive bombing as they search for food.
