Walking The Sill I
Walking The Sill I
INSPIRATION
Living as I do on the doorstep of the Northumberland National Park, the Whin Sill is a very distinct geological feature of the Northumberland landscape stretching from the Farne Islands off the coast to the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. Hadrian’s Wall was built on top of it and the Hadrian’s Wall path is a national long distance footpath that follows the edge of the Sill from Wallsend on the east coast to Bowness -on-Solway on the west coast. It is also home to the endangered curlew, the symbol of the Northumberland National Park.
The artist in me is drawn to strong, unmistakable silhouettes and the wide open skies of the landscape around me. It only seemed right to incorporate within the print some of the actual plants and grasses that are the natural home of the curlew. I hope my print will encourage people to look more carefully at (and therefore value) this fabulous, slightly other-worldly bird that has become a symbol of Northumberland.
The materials for this plate included scored mountboard, wood filler, PVA, textured wall papers and carborundum with inked up grasses placed on the inked plate surface as the plate and paper goes through the etching press.
