A Haunting Call from the Moors and Coast

The curlew's silhouette, is etched in my memory, stretching back to my time living in Northumberland. There, on the moorlands, their haunting call echoed across the landscape, yet a glimpse of the bird itself remained elusive. Now, on the Isle of Bute, the curlew's presence is a familiar sight, their graceful forms gracing the shorelines and the fields close to the sea.

Curlews have declined by 49% between 1995 and 2021 across the UK except on the Isle of Bute where you can still find them in apparent abundance. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t take them for granted.
